DVLA Provisional Licence
If you’re learning to drive, you’ll need to get a provisional driving licence. This post covers everything you need to know about getting a provisional licence, including how to apply, what you need to do before you start driving, and what restrictions are in place for provisional licence holders.
The first step to getting your full driving licence is to apply for a provisional licence. You can do this up to three months before your 17th birthday. The earliest you can start driving is on your 17th birthday.
To apply for a provisional licence, you’ll need to:
be a resident of England, Scotland, or Wales
be aged 17 or over (16 if you’re applying for a licence to drive a moped or motorcycle)
have a valid passport or other form of identity
have a valid UK address
have a passport-style photo
Once you’ve got your provisional licence, you can start learning to drive. You can take driving lessons with a qualified instructor, or you can practise with a friend or relative who’s over 21 and has held a full driving licence for at least three years.
Before you start driving, you’ll need to make sure you’re familiar with the Highway Code. This is a set of rules that all drivers must follow, and it covers everything from speed limits to right of way.
Once you’re ready to start driving, there are a few restrictions you need to be aware of:
You must display L plates (or D plates in Wales) at the front and rear of the vehicle.
You must not drive on motorways.
You must not drive unaccompanied by a qualified driver.
You must not drive after drinking any alcohol.
You must not drive while using a mobile phone.
If you’re found to be breaking any of these rules, you could be fined, have your licence revoked, or even be sent to prison.
Once you’ve held your provisional licence for at least six months, you can take your driving test. If you pass, you’ll be issued with a full driving licence and can start driving without any restrictions.
If you need to renew your provisional driving licence in the United Kingdom, there are a few things you need to do. First, you need to make sure that you are still eligible to drive. To do this, you need to check your driving record and make sure that you have not been banned from driving in the UK. If you have been banned, you will need to reapply for a new licence.
Once you have checked your driving record, you need to fill out a renewal form. This form is available online or from your local driving centre. Once you have filled out the form, you need to send it off to the DVLA with the appropriate fee.
Once your application has been processed, you will receive your new licence in the post. It is important to remember that your new licence will only be valid for 10 years. After this, you will need to renew it again.
