Driving licence categories in Ireland
To legally drive a vehicle, you must hold the relevant licence or permit and ensure it remains valid.
There are 15 different licence categories covering all vehicle types and these fall into two main groups:
- Group 1 licence categories (cars, motorcycles and works vehicles) can be licensed for up to 10 years, subject to age and medical requirements.
- Group 2 licence categories (buses and trucks) must be renewed every 5 years.

The table below explains each of the 15 licence categories in more detail and lists the minimum age at which you can apply for a learner permit.

Notes:
Minimum Age* refers to the minimum age at which you can hold a learner permit in that category.
MAM1 – Maximum Authorised Mass – refers to gross vehicle weight (g.v.w.) and it is usually displayed on a metal plate attached to the vehicle by the manufacturer.
Tricycle: Where a person had an entitlement to the category B full licence prior to 19 January 2013 that also covered them to ride tricycles, they still retain that entitlement. All first full licences issued for the category B from 19 January 2013 would not have this entitlement and therefore they must take out the appropriate bike category to ride a trike. The appropriate bike category will depend on the cc of the tricycle.
Moped: Where a person was issued the category B full licence prior to 21 October 2006 that also covered them to ride mopeds and therefore are entitled to the moped category AM provided the category B licence has not expired for more than 10 years.
